Recommended places to visit while in Conneticut for 2 days?

I have two days for R&R and would like to crunch as much in - without having to travel to much around Hartford area. I can extend stay at hotel, but its expensive and I prefer to keep to a budget for other expenses. I’m looking for:
1) inexpensive hotel in safe neighborhood (under $100)
2) must see historical landmark or museum (rank in order of ‘must see’
3) great local food favorites that tourtist might not know of

Museums -
a) is it worth driving to Yale to see the museum and taking a campus tour or just go to many other museums near Hartford? If I do go to Yale, should I stay at a hotel in New Haven?
b) What other cities do you recommend me visiting?
c) What, if any, areas/cities are dangerous or should be avoided?
d) Is the carousel museum a disappointment?
e) Is everything is tax free when you go shopping or am I confused with another state?
